Nikolay “Kolya” Nikolaevich Dubovik (b. 1986) is a highly decorated and exceptionally skilled painter representing the new generation of the Moscow Realist school. His artistic education was exemplary; after graduating from the 1905 Moscow Memorial State Academic School of Art, he was accepted into the famed Surikov Institute. There, he studied monumental painting in the studio of the illustrious People’s Artist of Russia, Professor E. N. Maksimov, graduating with honors in 2012. A member of the Russian Union of Artists, his immense talent was recognized early, winning multiple student competitions during his time at the Surikov.
Dubovik’s work demonstrates a masterful command of the realist tradition, infused with a contemporary energy. In his painting "February Sunny Evening," he captures the complex, low light of late winter with a sophisticated and subtle palette, finding beauty in a quiet, everyday moment. In contrast, a work like "Stormy Day in Hastings" showcases his dynamic ability to render atmosphere and mood, a skill honed during his international plein air events in the UK. Whether depicting a tranquil Russian evening or a dramatic English coastline, his paintings are characterized by their strong composition, confident brushwork, and deep connection to place.
His career is marked by extensive international experience and recognition. He has participated in plein air events and exhibitions across the globe, including in Italy, the United Kingdom, Montenegro, Kyrgyzstan, and China. His work has been shown in the Russian Embassy in London and the Russian Academy of Arts, confirming his status as a significant young master. For the collector, acquiring a painting by Kolya Dubovik is an opportunity to invest in the future of the Russian school. His work offers the technical brilliance of a Surikov-trained artist combined with a fresh, worldly perspective, making him one of the most compelling painters of his generation.
