Gennady Pavlovich Sorogin (1930-2004) was a significant painter of the Socialist Realist school and a member of the USSR Union of Artists since 1960. His extensive art education began at the Saratov Art College (1945-1950), followed by a degree from the prestigious Surikov Art Institute in Moscow (1951-1957), where he studied in the workshop of Professor P.P. Sokolov-Skalya. This elite training prepared him for a successful career creating large-scale thematic paintings, genre scenes, and landscapes that embodied the spirit of his era. He also worked in the influential "Agitplakat" workshop, which specialized in creating official state posters.
Sorogin was a master of thematic painting and landscape, working within the powerful tradition of Socialist Realism. His skill in capturing the essence of the Russian landscape is clearly demonstrated in works from the our collection. The painting "Vologda" depicts the historic northern city, showcasing his ability to create a sense of place and atmosphere with a realistic and nuanced palette. In "Village of Louts," he turns his focus to a more intimate, rural scene, finding a quiet dignity in the depiction of country life. Both paintings are rendered with the confident, academic technique he honed at the Surikov Institute.
As a regular participant in major art exhibitions, Sorogin's work was widely seen and collected by institutions, including the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. His paintings have also been sold at international auctions, including in England, showing a lasting appreciation for his work outside of Russia. For the collector, Sorogin's work represents an authentic and high-quality example of the Soviet school, created by a Surikov-trained master. His paintings are historically significant works that capture the diverse themes—from historic cities to quiet village life—of the Soviet era.
