Alexey Nikolaevich Sukhovetsky (b. 1953) is a People's Artist of Russia, a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, and a pivotal figure in contemporary Russian art as a celebrated painter and educator. His artistic training is of the highest caliber; after graduating from the Moscow Secondary Art School, he entered the Surikov Art Institute, graduating in 1982 from the studio of the legendary master T.T. Salakhov. Today, he continues this profound legacy as the head of the Painting and Composition Department at his alma mater, the Surikov Institute, shaping the next generation of Russian artists.
Sukhovetsky is a master of multiple genres, from complex compositions to intimate still lifes and landscapes. In his painting "Still Life with Fruit," from our collection, he demonstrates his connection to the classical tradition. The work is a masterful study in form and texture, with each object rendered with academic precision and a sophisticated understanding of light. In a different genre, "Winter Parkway" showcases his ability to capture a specific mood and atmosphere. The painting conveys the quiet, cold stillness of winter through a subtle, tonal palette and a strong, deliberate composition. Both works highlight the intellectual and technical brilliance that is a hallmark of his style.
A regular participant in major exhibitions since 1976, Sukhovetsky's work has been shown extensively in Russia and internationally, including exhibitions in Spain, France, and the United States. As a People's Artist and a leading professor at the Surikov Institute, his importance in the world of contemporary Russian art cannot be overstated. For the collector, acquiring a painting by Alexey Sukhovetsky is to own a work by a living master who is both a product of the great Soviet academic tradition and a key figure in its ongoing evolution.
